Inspiration:
I was inspired to make this beanie because I wanted a thick, chunky hat to keep me warm this fall. I knew I wanted it to be super simple to make, but still have some fun texture. Enter, the third loop half-double crochet stitch! This stitch is what creates those beautiful “bands” around the beanie, but don’t worry! This stitch is very easy to do, and I’m going to show you how.
Yarn:
First, let’s talk about the yarn I chose for this pattern. I went with one of my favorites, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. This is a really popular yarn, and for good reason. It’s a wool-acrylic blend, which means you get the softness and warmth of wool with the ease of care of acrylic! This yarn is a category 6 Super Bulky yarn, it works up quickly, and it comes in an endless variety of solids, stripes, and variegated colorways. I chose the colorway “Mustard” because I am a sucker for mustard yellow in the fall! Some of my other favorite colorways for this pattern are Harvest, Toasted Almond, Driftwood, and the classic Fisherman.
I’ve made this pattern available in four sizes: adult, child, toddler, and infant. These hats are also unisex and would look good on anyone! (Anyone looking for holiday gift ideas?) My husband even wears one in the color Harvest. I can just picture a whole family wearing these beanies! How cute?
Techniques:

This hat pattern is written in the round, but don’t let that intimidate you if you’ve never worked in the round before! It is super simple with only three rounds of increases for the adult size. If you know the basic crochet stitches (single, half-double, and double crochet) you can make this beanie! This pattern begins with a magic circle, which gives a seamless look to the top of the beanie, and is finished with one row of ribbing using front post double crochet and back post double crochet. Now, on to the special stitch: third loop half-double crochet.
This stitch is created exactly like a normal half-double crochet, except it isn’t worked into the normal “v” at the top of the stitch. Instead, it is worked into the THIRD loop created by half-double crochet. This loop is located behind the top “v” of each stitch. You will be working into one strand of yarn instead of two. There will also be one round of this pattern in which you work a single crochet into the third loop. This is exactly what it sounds like – a single crochet worked into that same third loop created by the previous row of half-double crochet. That’s it! That’s the third loop half-double crochet stitch! Now, onto the pattern!
